The Maryland film fest was in town this weekend. I was able to see two films, Modern Love is Automatic and Treeless Mountain.

Note: these reviews are terse. Go read full reviews elsewhere…

Modern Love is Automatic is an interesting film, centering around a time period in the life of Lorianne. Lorianne lives a boring life, working as a nurse, speaking only as required. She becomes a dominatrix as a past time. Her emotional commitment to this hobby is not very great. Her roommate, an aspiring model, becomes a mattress model. I found the idea of selling mattresses this way very interesting and possible. Oh, there is also loud cuts and transitions with metal music.

Overall, I liked the film. It was a good character piece. I can relate to Lorianne and her detachment to the world. The heavy metal music cuts were a good change of pace to the film. The dominatrix scenes were not that out-there and were not very sexual, which reinforces her detachment. The scene of her in the SS uniform was hot, even though she admits she’s jewish.

Treeless Mountain is a completely different film about two south korean orphans. The film is slow, asian and introspective. I really enjoyed it, but hated the guy sitting next to me. He kept laughing at everything and the film was not funny. It was a pretty serious, somber film with one or two lighter moments. He laughed at anything that seem out of the ordinary for him.

The film was touching and I’m glad I saw it. I was really happy with the ending. I really hate the seats in the Charles theater. They are only and need an upgrade. After the first hour they make my back hurt. They are the reason why I drive to the suburbs to watch movies.

I’m happy to finally accomplish this. Now I need to watch the Lone Gunman.

So the Chicago Tribune allows people to comment on articles. Someone complained to the “Problem Solvers” that Spirit airlines will not let them take extra baggage along for “missionary” supplies. I suggested she take responsibility for not exploring other options and perhaps use airfreight.

Someone replied, validating my cold-hearted bitchiness and said I am a plague upon mankind and should die. It made my day.

AC Bmore wrote:

Why can’t she just ship them or send them on a cargo flight?
She obviously did not do enough research before hand is and complaining now because she has to be responsible for her mistakes. When will people grow up and learn to accept their mistakes as a lesson and move on in life.
There are alternatives, but I guess she is too cheap to really want to help these people by spending a little money to get the supplies there properly.

Say, dimwit, air-freight isn’t exactly cheap and it’s nothing like the low cost of accompanied baggage. In the old days excess luggage was charges at 25% that of unaccompanies air-freight. Today different airlines have different checked baggage rules, limits and fees. If you’d read the article you’d have learned that the humanitarian mission [volunteers using donated funds] had sued Spirit recently and there was a $25 excess baggage fee beyond a single bag. Furthermore, the article tells us that Spirit’ web-site didn’t disclose the limitation/exclusion.
Stating that the party was ‘too cheap’ defies any and all logic and/or compassion; these were VOLUNTEERS spending DONATED FUNDS and expending THEIR OWN TIME to provide medical care to those whom would otherwise have none. You are… a plague upon mankind. Go curl up somewhere and die; or, apply for a job at Spirit Airlines – you sound like precisely their kind of employee!

The full conversation is here and the article is here.

I left a little bottle of Germ-X in the gym, since our other hand sanitizer has been out for a couple weeks. I was hoping it would be acommunal thing; I was trying to be nice. I had a sneaking suspicion that it would be taken. My time at Target has taught me people will steal absolutely anything.

Went down to the gym (it’s in the basement) today and it’s gone. The other hand sanitizer hasn’t been refilled either. I wanted to post a sign saying “Thanks for stealing the Germ-x. I hope we spread nasty germs down here.”, but I’m restraining myself.

Oh well, this is the last time I’m doing anything nice for the gym. I’ll start bringing my own again.

Humanity’s Report card for today:

I had a radom act of kindness preformed for me today.

I had several bags from target, a pack of paper towels and a full length mirror. I pressed the button for the elevator and while waiting, a lady on a phone comes up, takes the mirror and presses the button. We get on the elevator, she’s still on the phone. I press my floor and i think i hear her say “5″, but it turns out she wasn’t speaking english. The door opens at 5. I’m expecting her to get out. I can handle the mirror and stuff. She says she’s on another floor, but is going to take my mirror to my place. She continues to talk on the phone, but says she understands it’s one of those days when you need to get everything at once.

We get off and I have her set it outside my door and thank her greatly. I’m really stunned and surprised. She never even asked or said anything, just took the mirror and got on. At first, i was wondering if she was just going to take it, but that’s my paranoid side.

I’m glad there are still nice people willing to help out unasked. It just really startled me. I’m used to doing things alone.
