Paying for torture
I’ve just agreed to pay large sums of $ to have no time and be mentally tortured. At the end (after a couple of years), I hope to have my Masters!
Observations of my ever so exciting life…
I’ve just agreed to pay large sums of $ to have no time and be mentally tortured. At the end (after a couple of years), I hope to have my Masters!
I’m too lazy to post on this blog for real. I’ve just found out about Tumblr, a micro-blogging site. It will allow me to quickly post something, usually small rants I don’t feel like putting up here. Plus my fish is on it. I’m not completely abandoning this site, I just write all day and usually do not feel like writing lost posts when I get home.
I got stuck in the elevator a couple nights ago. Nothing seemed amiss, just got on and pressed the button. It went to our floor, but the door never opened. Tried several different floors, still not opening. Held down the call button, no one from the outside came. Dan had to pry the door open and rescue us… I’m taking the stairs for a while. Our elevator has had problems before, usually if you bounce it, it will open, but not this time. It was a little disconcerting. So, now I’ve been stuck in an elevator.
Last week was slightly less than boring compared to the usual humdrum. We decided to not move. Mostly because we really can’t get a better deal, moving would suck and commuting would suck even more. So we bought a new couch. Same style as the old one, just purply brown. This is mostly so Dan can sleep on it and not take up living room space. I’m happy. We’ve also decided to spruce up the apartment some. Dan removed the kitchen cupboard doors. Once we got things arranged, it is nice. Also bought a little rack to handle some clutter.
I took Tuesday off to deal with my car and other stuff. The car took forever at the dealer and Dan got grumpy. Didn’t do too much else that day. We also decided to upgrade our Cable to HD DVR. They were supposed to come out on Friday to give us a new box. Told us the day of they didn’t have any and we have to reschedule. So hopefully by this weekend I’ll have it. Washer also broke this week. Still don’t have a replacement. Hopefully that will happen tomorrow.
Oh and are you ready to rumble? Hockey season has started!! The summer break was really short. I’m also pumped about getting HD to watch hockey in HD all season.
So I’ve decided to apply for a jr. developer position at work. I’ve decided that i’m not sure how staying a tech writer will help my future. I can’t definitively see myself doing tech writing or being a product manager in 5 years. i think i want to stay in a more active role. I can see being a developer for the next 5 years and growing a lot. I’m also not challenged. I love my job, but fighting with Word everyday is getting tedious. I sometimes have to “dumb down” things i do for other ppl. I’m feeling that my skills can be applied in a better position.
I don’t know if i’ll get it. I haven’t done any real development in over 2 years. Everyone seems really happy about me applying and think i will get it. I hope so. I just think i’m finally ready for it. I feel bad about screwing my boss, but i need to do this for me.
So long time, no writey… I know. I just haven’t felt like it..
I miss gencon – There, I’ve said it. I miss the fun and people and concert and food. I don’t miss walking miles in uncomfortable shoes to look hot. Now I’ve realized my giant feet problem, hopefully next year will be better. I do miss nerdy guys taking pix of me cause i’m hot.
Life’s been about the same for me, nothing to exciting. Got to see the fam. about a month ago, so that was good.
Happy 25th bday Republic of Badgerstan!
Work took us to six flags america outside of DC for our semi-anual kickoff. We only had a couple hours since it was a half day, which made us hurry and and only ride a couple rides. We were all expecting it to be crowded and ghetto, but it really wasn’t. They had some food for us, but it was minimally vegetarian. I wasn’t feeling 100%, so i didn’t ride everything. Went on a little tube go down a water ride, didn’t really get wet. Watched people go on the batwing ride. I didn’t feel like laying on my back and going around loops backwards. Watching everyone and hanging out with the nonriders was cool. Ended up playing “name that obsurce bollywood film” with the indian QA ladies. They all knew the films i’ve seen.
After that ride I watched them do another one which had lots of loops. I then went on the wooden Roar coaster. I’m a wooden coaster fan. I’m not big into the upside down stuff. I am paranoid that the seatbelt is going to open and the bar isn’t going to keep me in. For the first half i did my meditation of i’m not here and just let the ride take me, then i opened my eyes and started screaming. It was fun. Watched them ride another once, the mind eraser. Everyone said it smacked there heads back and forth too much. That was all we had time for. They were going to have a 4, 5 and 6pm bus, but before we got there they changed it so the last bus left at 5. We got stuck in traffic and didn’t get back until after 6:15. Ended up talking B5 to a guy for half an hour, so that was great. I love sharing my love of b5. I’m such a nerd.
Overall, great day. I don’t plan on going back to the park though. It wasn’t laid out well, half the stuff wasn’t running. I’m sure when there’s lots of people it sucks.
Take this giant foot monster!

and this!

Yea! I’ve defeeted the giant foot monster! Thank you Zappos.com for having cute shoes in wide sizes! The world is saved and I can still defeat the zombies in these
So i’ve finally slept enough to write about my vacation. I had a friend from home come and visit me. She really needed to get away and i was looking forward to actually having a true vacation and doing stuff. She came thrusters night and we hung out and watched cable. She can’t get cable where she lives, and she’s a news junkie, so it was easy to entertain her.
Friday – took the Marc to DC. These are really nice trains. It takes about an hour to get to DC, but for 7$, it’s better than driving. We got off at Union Station, which is a pretty old station with a mini mall inside. Took the DC Metro into the national mall area. Friday was beautiful . The weather was pleasant and breezy. Visited the Smithsonian castle, then the 2 art museums next to it. One was kinda boring. The modern art was interesting. A german photographer was on exhibition. I don’t think his work was Smithsonian quality, but nevertheless was cool. We then went to the American Indian museum to eat lunch. They have interesting, but overpriced food from around the different Americas. I had chocolate coconut soup. It was very much native south american unsweetened chocolate. It grew on me, but i could not finish it. The museum itself is newer, so there wasn’t too much to see. It was mostly about how modern american indians are living today. The clothing exhibit was my favorite part. I did feel a little connection to the museum since i’m at least 1/8 indian (Blackfoot & Cherokee from my mom). They pretty much completely avoided the whole “trail of tears” or i missed it. They did have a lot about how the early indians were conquered and the various indian language bibles. I would have liked to seen a true, harsh exhibit of how they were exterminated, rather than the outcomes of today. After that we walked around the capital. it was really pretty with the nice weather. We then walked all the way to the other end to the washington monument. My feet really got a workout that day. We watched the Prestige when we got home. I really love that movie. Watching it again filled in a lot of the gaps and i had to explain it to her. Sometimes i feel i’m the only one who really gets this movie. I’ve had to explain it to others as well.
Sat – Ate indian (from india) food. Went to the discount bookstore, Daedalus and bought too much. Came back and took a nap then went for a walk around the neighborhood. Had drinks and desert at a place near my house. Watched Who Killed the Electric Car. Interesting documentary about how big oil and car companies run the world.
Sun – Went to red emma’s then down to the harbor. Visited the aquarium, i don’t think it’s super great, but decent. Stopped at the Helmand on the way back, ate Afghani food. I think it’s okay, but not spectacular. I prefer indian food.
Monday – Went to DC again. It was really hot and muggy. Went to the WWII, Vietnam, Korean war memorials. Saw the Lincoln monument. Went to the National Art Gallery. It was a lot better than the other two art galleries. The building was really pretty. It had a lot of famous art. I saw a De Vinci, plus many others. I was yelled at for accidentally touching an unguarded table, that I didn’t know was part of the exhibit. I mean, who puts a table in the middle of a big room with no ropes or anything and has stuff atop it and doesn’t expect anyone to touch it. It was pretty unconscious of me too. I just saw a place to rest my hand. Oh well. Went to the air & space museum, but it was so crowded we just went to the gift store. Went to the Postal museum after that. It was small, but empty. I would like to spend more time there, but my feet were hurting too much. Trying to get in was interesting. It was the only one to have metal detectors. I guess the air and space did, but it was too busy to care. I’m wearing cargo pants and forgot i shoved lots of stuff in them. So i set it off and they start asking me to take stuff out of my pockets. They were really suspicious of my wallet. I forgot about my cell, took it out and they had to xray it. I still set it off, so they spent 5 mins wanding me. Turns out I forgot i had my keys in my pocket, plus some change and my belt and steel toe boots. So i probably won’t go back because of all the rigmarole to get in.
Overall, great vacation where i was able to relax and enjoy myself.
So, I impulsivly bought a mini exercise trampoline. It was on clearance for 20$ and I wasn’t sure if the other ones would fit in my car. This one requires some assembly. It’s elastic straps instead of springs. I have to basically fold it in half and open it like a clam and “snap” it together. It’s really not working like that. I’m sure it was returned because someone couldn’t get it together. There is a lot of tension in it. I’m not giving up. The directions call for 3 people to assemble it, so we’ll see.
On another grr note, Datadirect and Zap2It are discontinuing their tv guide service. This means unless an alternative is found, my mythtv guide will stop working in September. grr.. *sigh* that’s life
